Dharamshala prepares plan to prevent Forest Fires
In recent years, Himachal Pradesh has faced a significant challenge in the form of forest fires. These fires not only pose a threat to the natural biodiversity of the region but also have far-reaching consequences on the environment and the local communities.
The onset of the fire season poses a risk for many highly populated regions located near forests. In these areas, alerts about fires can be reported online through the fire alert system. In Dharamshala, the forest department is actively working to control forest fires during this season and has implemented measures to ensure that the fire brigade has sufficient water resources to combat fires effectively.
Speaking to media, Dinesh Sharma, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Dharamshala, said that “water conservation efforts in the Forest Division of Dharamshala have been completed. This includes the construction of check dams and forest lakes, which have been mapped by the District Disaster Management Authority. In case of a fire emergency, the fire brigade has access to this mapped information and can easily locate and use water sources from these check dams and forest lakes.”
The DFO said “we have instructed staff to remain vigilant in the forest area near densely populated regions to quickly report any small fires through the online fire alert system.” Additionally, the forest department staff is prepared to respond promptly in critical areas, he added.
Dharamshala reported 5 incidents of Forest Fire
According to DFO within the first 15 days of the fire season in the Forest Division Dharamshala, there have been 5 small-scale forest fire incidents that have been promptly controlled, with no reported losses so far.
The DFO said “forest fires can be caused by either natural factors or human activities. Prolonged dry periods can lead to ground fires caused by pine needles in the forests. Some individuals believe that burning pine needles helps promote grass growth, leading them to intentionally set fires, an illegal activity. If anyone found setting fires in the forest will face legal action.”
Forest fires in Himachal Pradesh are a recurring issue that poses a significant threat to the region’s ecosystem and biodiversity. Despite efforts to prevent and control these fires, they continue to wreak havoc on the delicate environment of the state.
Every year, our environment is plagued by the devastating effects of forest fires. It is crucial for us to come together and take action to protect our forests and preserve the health of our planet for future generations.
