The decision to ordain a dalit seer with the revered title of ‘Jagatguru’ marks a significant step towards inclusivity and diversity within the traditionally hierarchical structures of Hindu community. The decision has been met with widespread praise and approval, particularly from organizations like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, who see it as a positive and progressive development. By bestowing this title upon a dalit seer, Juna Akhara is not only recognizing the spiritual leadership and wisdom of individuals from marginalized communities but also challenging prejudices and stereotypes. This decision is a powerful statement that highlights the importance of equality, unity, and acceptance within the Hindu community.

For the very first time, a seer from the Scheduled Caste has been honoured with the prestigious title of ‘Jagatguru’, marking a significant milestone in the community. By bestowing the title of ‘Jagadguru’ upon a seer from the Scheduled Caste, the spiritual community affirms its commitment to honouring merit and spiritual attainment above societal distinctions.

Juna Akhara, one of the 13 Akharas in the country, bestowed the title of Jagatguru on Mahendranand Giri. While ‘Kailashanand Giri’ was given the title of Mahamandaleshwar and ‘Ram Giri’ was given the title of Shri Mahant. Both these seers also come from the Scheduled Caste.

Mahendranand Giri, Kailashanand Giri, and Ram Giri, all three seers, hail from Gujarat.

Shri Mahant Prem Giri said, “Juna Akhara is dedicated to eradicating caste and class discrimination within the sanyasi tradition.”

“Before Maha Kumbh-2025, key decisions are being made to honour Scheduled Caste seers with significant titles such as Jagadguru, Mahamandaleshwar, and Shri Mahant,” he added.

The conferment of the title ‘Jagadguru’ acknowledges the profound spiritual knowledge, wisdom, and devotion of the seer. This step will promote equality and diversity within the spiritual realm, paving the way for greater inclusivity and representation for individuals from marginalized communities.

In 2021, at the Haridwar Kumbh, Mahendranand was appointed as Mahamandaleshwar by the Juna Akhara.
