KFW project reviving an age-old tradition, providing eco-friendly solutions

The KFW project is a project funded by the German Development Bank. The project aims to revive products made from date palm leaves through training programmes conducted in different locations. As a result, these products, which used to fetch low prices, are now commanding higher prices. The use of plastic brooms and mats in households is contributing to environmental degradation, while products made from date palm leaves are yielding positive outcomes.

KFW project providing eco- friendly solutions

Chief Project Director, Himachal Pradesh Forest Ecosystem Climate Proofing Project, IPS Upasana said, “through the KFW project, an initiative has been taken to revive the products made from date palm leaves along with plantation. Under this, training is also being given in Dharamshala, Palampur, Dehra and Dalhousie. KFW is a purely forestry project, where products should be made only from the materials found in the forest.”

“In an effort to promote sustainability, our project aims to revitalize the production of eco-friendly products such as brooms and baskets made from date palm leaves. With the prevalence of plastic brooms in the market, we are providing training to ensure that date palm brooms are not only effective but also visually appealing to consumers”, she said.

In the past, homes used mats made from date palm leaves, but the shift to plastic mats has had a negative impact on the environment. By reintroducing these traditional products, we are seeing a positive shift towards eco-friendly alternatives that benefit both the environment and the community, she added.
